Alcestis is the Latinised form of the ancient Greek name Alkestis. In Greek mythology, Alcestis was the loving wife of King Admetus of Thessaly, one of the Argonauts. She sacrificed her life to save his, but was later rescued from Hades by Hercules. The famous ancient Greek tragedian Euripides made the legend into a play. The name may be from the Greek noun 'alke' (power, spirit, courage). |
