It might mean “of the earth” from 'aia' the poetic form of the word “gaia” meaning earth.
Sophocles related the name to 'aiazo' , “to wail”, “cry.” or 'aiastes', "mourner".
The name of the Great Ajax is also said to be derived from “aiteos” meaning, “eagle".
