The name of a river bordering Hades, the Greek Underworld. Originally Acheron was the son of Demeter and was punished for helping the Titans by being cast into the Underworld where he turned into the river. Not generally used as a first name, though notably employed in Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" series of novels.
