Additional info: |
Common English transcription of the Hebrew Avshalom. A son of King David in the Old Testament, Absalom's story is tragic. He was killed, against the orders of his father, in a foiled attempt to usurp power from him. Absolom's beautiful and bountiful locks of hair became entangled in a tree, pulling him from his horse and leaving him suspended; he was killed by David's men as he hung there. The name Absalom is also found as a surname, although its use as such came from the given, or first, name. William Faulkner wrote a well-known book called "Absalom, Absalom!" |
