Common English transcription of the Hebrew Avshalom. A son of King David in the Old Testament, Absalom's story is tragic. He was killed, against the orders of his father, in a foiled attempt to usurp power from him. Absolom's beautiful and bountiful locks of hair became entangled in a tree, pulling him from his horse and leaving him suspended; he was killed by David's men as he hung there.
