Abner, in the Bible, was a son of Ner. A cousin to Saul, he was chief commander of Saul's military forces. After Saul's death, Abner was defeated by David at the pool of Gibeon. He later became a supporter of David, but was killed by Joab, the chief commander of David's army. Abner Doubleday was an American Civil War general and invented the game of baseball. There is also popular cartoon strip called Li'l Abner. There is also a famous collection of stories and books by Anna Catherine Green called "Uncle Abner: Master of Mystery" written at the turn of the 20th century. |
