  • Additional Info:
Abednego was the Babylonian name of Azariah, who was one of the three companions of the Biblical prophet Daniel. Azariah was renamed Abednego by the king Nebuchadnezzar, who probably derived the name Abednego from the name "Abednebo", hence why Abednego and and Abednebo are usually listed with the same meaning. Nebo (or Nabu) was the name of the Babylonian god of wisdom and writing.

Abednego, along with Shadrach (Hananiah) and Meshach (Mishael), refused to bow down and worship the golden idol of Nebuchadnezzar. In turn, Nebuchadnezzar ordered the three men thrown into a "fiery furnace". To the astonishment of all present, the three men were unharmed by the flames and a fourth figure is seen in the furnace with them. When Nebuchadnezzar realizes that their God is protecting them, he orders his people to worship their God instead of the golden idol.
