I've heard a lot of people on this board say that this name is a nn. My little sister is called Katy, NOT Kathryn or anything like that, simply Katy. I named her, so obviously I love this name and don't understand why people don't seem to think it's a name in it's own right. Can someone please explain to me?

I think many people just see it as insubstantial. It seems, to me anyway, sort of informal and doesn't age as well as it's more formal counterparts (is that the right word?).
Obviously, though, if it works on your sister then I guess it's fine

I think of it more as a nn too which I think is really cute on a little girl, but it doesn't seem to age well. Kate is a great nn after a little girl outgrows Katy/Katie.

Kate sounds like a name in its own right, but not Katy. It just doesn't seem like a full name. I know it sometimes is though.
Katy just makes me remember the 'What Katy Did' books from childhood. The characters full name was Katherine.

Thanks for your opinions. Is there anyone that agrees with me that it stands well on its own and isn't too cutesy?

Personally, I think the name is just plain. I don't think it has any flavor and there is just TOO many Katies,Katy,Kati, etc. in this world! It's better then Kate but not by much. I dislike blah names with a passion and I feel as if this is one of them.

My friend is a Katy (not Kathryn etc.) and she is always having to explain that it's not Kathryn etc. I like Katy as a full name, but I think that a Katy will always have the explaining problem. It's not too cutesy, with a 'y' it's more sophisticated and feminine.

If I met someone named Katy or Katie, I would automatically assume they were named Katharine, or any of its variants.
It just seems so nickname-y to me, something a Katharine would go by as a young child, before they used their full name as they got older.
There's nothing wrong with the name at all, it just has a big link with being a nn for Katharine in my mind.
