I just read this article and I'm grossed out by it.

I'm not sure how constantly washing sheets, pajamas, underwear, or ruining a mattress or chair really is better than using a pad or tampon.

What do you think?

I'm actually somewhat like that. I don't like to go to sleep with any of that stuff in/on and, no, my sheets and pyjamas haven't suffered excessively. Probably helps though that I have menstrual sheets/clothing that I use only during that time of the month.

what a nutty idea that is! That's just nasty and unsanitary. What next, a "free-snotter" or a "free-pee-er"?...just let all of your bodily juices fly free and drip all over- yuck!? I'm also wondering what sort of goofy guy would want to wake up in a bed that looks like a murder scene- gross! Crazy people.

I know of women who don't wear anything at night since the flow is so light.

How do you protect your mattress?

I have a nice mattres-protector that slips over it just as a regular fitted sheet would. A cousin of mine had tss like five years back, she was in Yale Hospital for two weeks fighting like a dog to stay alive so I really don't feel comfortable wearing a tampon to bed. Maybe it seems wacky to some of you, but I think sleeping with your blood stored within (or pressed intimately against) you seems less hygenic then allowing it to flow. Also, I've never woken up with my bed looking like a murder scene...even on heavy nights.

huh...I have very heavy flow - I would be a complete mess if I thought about going free-flow, not to mention that my husband would be totally repulsed if he saw a spot on the sheets. He thinks that's a very private thing and can't even handle seeing the pink papers from the pads lying in the bathroom!

Ha, did you all notice the "instructions to sew your own coinpurse in the shape of a vulva, complete with anatomocal features..."? How funny.

Anyway, the writer isn't suggesting always going around free bleeding, so I doubt she smells bad (not any worse than someone with a pad in for a few hours). I've accidentally gone to sleep with no pad or tampon in when I was on my period, and the blood didn't leak everywhere, it just stained my inner thighs (just as the writer mentioned).
I personally prefer to use pads when sleeping, but it doesn't disgust me to know that someone else prefers to "free bleed." More power to her.
