okay, someone put devin on the list. i don't think devin is ghetto at all. there are a few names that i love but my boyfriend says they're ghetto sounding:

dante
donovan
tiara(girls name)

i love all those names though

Wow, you're boyfriend thinks all 3 of these sound "ghetto?" (whatever that means) People with the name "Dante" that I have known have been Italian-American working-class...and so have those named "Donovan" -- except "Irish"...and as far as "Tiara" -- well, I guess I'm partial (check the ticker) ...but there's nothing "ghetto" about me or my daughter.

Are there moderators on this board? This thread needs to be closed, it is highly offensive and racist with all the insinuations that only Blacks can be "ghetto". Often people think that names are made up or ghetto sounding just don't know the origin of the name, but normally the names are not made up. For example, ever since Angelina Jolie named her daughter Zahara I have been reading that it is not a real name on this board. Zahara is an Arabic name meaning shining or luminous and was around before Angelina. And Tre is a nickname meaning third as in after senior, junior, etc. It's normally not the person's real, "government" name. Dante is a classic Italian name (ever read "The Divine Comedy" which goes to show just how old the name is) meaning lasting. Kareem and Jamal are Arabic names. Maisha (or Myesha) is a traditional Swahili name meaning life. Tyrone is an old Greek name meaning "king" and the list goes on and on. These are not recent names. Check the etymology before you start calling people out on their name choices.

My point is that just because a name has an African origin or is not in line with some of the more popular middle class American names it does not mean that it is ghetto or "just a bad name" as someone on here so eloquently Rolling Eyes stated.

Lord....help the children!! Why does the name have to be "ghetto"???WHY?? What is wrong with unique or unsual??? I personally find this whole topic to be offensive and racist. Evil or Very Mad Sure these might be names that only a few have heard of-but unique names are popular in the majority of the AA community-but to call them "ghetto" is jus sickening. I know my children will have unique names-but ill be damned to call them "ghetto"---thats not a flattering characteristic. Confused I agree with whoever said this topic needs to be locked-NOW....shoot u locked up my topic-and i didnt even start on no craziness. Where are the mod's when u need them?? Rolling Eyes

Honestly, I rather like many of the names listed as "ghetto". Some are pretty, some are exotic and most of them are reall names from other countries.

But I agree that using the term "ghetto names" to refer to these unusual names is degrading to whomever may have such a name or desire to name their child such a name.

Where are the mods? The mods are trying to watch all of the boards, keep tracks on fakers, keep tracks on faker-hunters, answer PMs and develop the site. How many times guys?

If there's a problem, PM a mod to let them know

We don't have someone sitting on each board 24/7, so this is the quickest way to get issues dealt with, rather than just complaining in a thread and waiting until one of us finds it.

In this case, I'm up for discussion, and so far this one's been OK, with those who disagree with the topic and find it offensive expressing their opinions appropriately. How about an intellectual discussion about the origins of names and causes of their popularity? However, for fear of being told I'm not doing my job, I'll lock it before the children arrive and turn it into a flame war.
