I think of Le-, De-, La-, and Da- in front of a normal, relatively normal, or made up name as being "ghetto." DeShawn, LeWanda, LaDonna, DeQuaya, etc. Faux French names drive me batty.
I also think of names like Princess, Urhighness, Speshelle, Preshess, Dutchesse, Uneek, and Nevaeh as being in this category.
Misspelled names fit too: Joddy (prn Jody), Tinna (prn Tinna), I can't think of any others off the top of my head, but I see this a lot here in Los Angeles.
Ciara, Kenya, Quaneeka, Yelitzah, Tiffanasia, Uniqua, Steffesha, moesha, myesha, Tanairy, Tamariqa, Dominicia, Any African country name (Kenya, which i like when it isnt like Swaziland or Zimbabwe... there's a girl at scool named Tunisia.)
and strangely enough:
Asian countries! Asia, Korea, China...
Boys: There are so many Indian names!
Tyrone, kareem, Jamal, Abdul...
Dizzydragonfly............why would you say that, Ciara is not ghetto in any shape or form and neither is Kenya, Asia, Tyrone, Jamal
this whole thing is way tooooo opinionated
Just think would if youre family members name or friends name was considered Ghetto, srry Im sounding so pissed but I dont like the word "ghetto"
To me the name LaDonna is the least ghetto you can get. It's my mothers name, and my mama is white, with blonde hair and blue eyes, she's not at all ghetto. Have you seen the movie Beauty Shop, she's like the southern chick, put her in the ghetto and she'd stick out like a sour thumb!
sweetie I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I'm black and from an impoverished area myself. I'm just saying that name isn't something I personally see as ghetto. That was my personal opinion, and I'll apologize upfront for offending anyone because that wasn't my intention. I was merely stating what I thought, and I'm sorry if I offended you.
So essentially the term "ghetto names" just applies to minorities in impoverished neighborhoods and the names they give their children.
Thanks Adalen that Is what Im trying to say, and thats why I dont like this post, because like I said before it is way to opinionated. And not eveyone is from a highclass area, some people do struggle and people fail to realize that so they say whatever they want
So essentially the term "ghetto names" just applies to minorities in impoverished neighborhoods and the names they give their children.
All of this "it's not ghetto because i have that name and i'm white" just makes this post 1,000 times more condescending than it originally was.
I found that to be offensive too. "Ghetto" does not mean "non-white" to me. It means people living in a cycle of economic disadvantage. I think people in that situation should be working in their communities to break that cycle.
As a person of mixed heritage, I feel prejudice from more than one camp, and no real acceptance from either. I think we should be proud of our heritage, while embracing our common culture.
Being a person of color in America has enough challenges associated with it. One shouldn't burden a child further with a peculiar, made-up name. I think poor little Sha'quayquay in the projects has enough to overcome. Her mama should give her a little boost up and name her sensibly (and try to teach and model standard spoken English, but that's another topic). Let's not make things worse for our babies by naming them laughably!
Again, I want to apologize for offending anyone. I honestly didn't mean to I was just offering my opinion. It's become clear that by doing that I offended people when I didn't intend to, and I'm sorry.
