Tiffani,...I am a Jamaican as well and honestly there is no such thing as a Jamaican name. Many jamaicans have names of either African, British, or Irish origin...why? You should know why LOL. But if you want a "black" name here are some nice ones that you may find mainly "black" ppl w/...which I think is what u were asking. LOL Right or wrong? But I'll give u some of my family members names as well since they're jamaican 2.
Aiyana
Jemila
Jhinelle
Janay or Jhene
Joriah
Jacqueline (alotta jamaicans have that name)
Samantha

I think Asia is a beautiful name for a black woman. It is very strong but also offers mystery and a little cultural flamboyance

I'm not going to get into the whole "racist" thing. I'm Native American and love all names. I do like the Unique names a lot better but I'm sure there's those people whole like the simple names. Just as you asked for a strong name I'm going to give you one that I think is very strong and unique. The name Chontre' is very beautiful for any one and is strong. Also the name TaPanga is African and Hebrew. Topanga is Native American.

I don't think there's any reason to be upset with somebody that wants to honor their heritage, but I think there may have been nicer ways to put it. I also do not think it a good idea to saddle a child with a name that sounds completely outrageous. Skip the apostrophes - and the dashes! The blacks that I know, whether from America, Africa or the Caribbean have a huge variety of names, many of them quite wonderful and befitting people of any race. Some names seem to pigeonhole a child into a some category that commands little respect. Think carefully, and I hope all goes well for your friend.
For girls:
We have abook with an African character, a little girl named: Elisabeti.
What about Miata for a girl? It's a lovely African name that sounds beautiful and thoughtful.
Isoke
Latifah
Malikia
Shakina
Chanecia (it seems to means smart and beautiful)
Shani (for marvelous in Swahili)
Desta
For boys:
Taye
Shakir
Hajari
Amir (prince in Swahili)
Malik (king)
It's also okay to name children for historic figures from your heritage, even if the names are of a different heritage - names like Harriet, Sojourner, and Nelson.

I agree that every child should have a strong name, and understand that many parents may want to keep soem ethnic traditions alive, however, my problem with this statement is this:
How would you feel had I made the statement
"I would like a strong name, one that my child can be proud of, however I dont want it to sound like a black name?"
The question should have been thought through and rewritten if it was not meant to be offensive.................

Anyone should take pride in naming themselves after thier own ethnicity. Blacks who always are offended
are ususally already used to denying the beauty of thier culture. There is such a thing as " white names" , let's face it and understand that "white people" don't deny themselves of thier cultural heritage, only the ignorant misifits among us. No apology is needed on either side.
Forget the sarcasim of the "apostrophe catastrophe" and grow up into the beauty your ethic security!
