The name Tamare Kathryn is one that comes to mind. Tamare pronounced --tuh--mar--ee-- sounds ethnic I think, and sounds confident. The name Kathryn isn't exactly ethnic, but I can't think of a stronger name that personifies power. Of course Kathryn can be spelled several different ways. My great aunt was Kathren. Hope this helps.

|

I see this more as a question of heritage than race. Many of us with Irish backgrounds, for instance, have traditionally chosen names like 'Erin' or 'Colleen' (even though the Irish themselves don't even use them.) More legitimate examples: Sinead, Kieran.
I don't know much about Jamaican names. I know when I go to Key West, which has a large Caribbean population, streets are named after 'island women' (at least, this is what I was told. ) These are traditional names obviously introduced by the British: Margaret, Elizabeth, Catherine, etc.
If, on the other hand, you are interested in an African name, possibilities abound. The 'apostrophe' names referred to, and the ones with definite articles (e.g., LaToya), are North American creations.
A nice Muslim African name: Jamila. It means 'beautiful.'
Another East African name: Iman. Everyone knows her: David Bowie's wife, supermodel.
In West Africa, educated Africans tend to choose French names for their daughters.
It all depends on what geograpical area you want to focus on, if any.
Then again, you could name her after a strong African-American figure, like Maya (Angelou), Gwendolyn (Brooks) or Toni (Morrison.) You could even make this 'Antonia.' From Haiti, there is a wonderful writer named Edwige (Danticat.) Hard to pronounce, not very pretty to listen to--but beautiful to read (her books, that is!).
Please, please, NO OPRAH!
Good luck,
Jennifer Edens
