Does anyone know the meaning of the name Cohen, of Coen, Kohen, Koen?
We want to use the name but I'd like to know what it means, if anything.
Or maybe when you use an unusual name there is no meaning? WDYT

A Cohen is a jewish priest who is a direct decendant of Aaron from the bible. It would be in extremely poor taste, and very disrespectful to the Jewish heritage to name a child Cohen.

Well Cohen is already a surname...so by that definition you would imply that anyone born into a family that have that name are automatically being disrespectful to Jewish heritage.

That's bad logic....
I think all that's being suggested is naming a child Cohen (without having the Jewish link) might be deemed less-than-respectful. Kind of like naming your child Christ, Buddha or perhaps Pope (a little stronger to the point, but you get my meaning).
Being born into a family called Cohen IS different - it suggests that somewhere along the line, there was obviously either a strong Jewish influence, or other "legitimate" reason for using the name.

But my own name, Sarah is Jewish, especially given to the wife of Abraham by God. I am not Jewish, nor is anyone in my family, nor are many others who have this name.
My brother is called Samuel and my dad is called David. Both are very important jewish figures from the bible, yet it is generally not considered to be disrespectful.

Right...but I was responding more to the "the family name of Cohen..implies etc" post.
Family names generally DO have a meaning behind 'em...even if that meaning is centuries old in origin.
First names are different.
I mean heavens to murgatroyd....about 99% of kids in my class had names all traceable to the Bible (Rebeccas, Sarahs, Pauls, Davids...you get the picture)....and you can bet your last penny that most of them weren't Biblical in nature (nor were most of the families).
But yeah...a family name (which does generally mean "surname") is a little different from a first name..that's really the point I was trying to make.

WOW! i don't want to disrespect anones culture or religion. i just love the name Cohen. I just wanted a meaning. This website says that Coen means brave. What is wrong with that? My hubby and I have hebrew names and so does one of our 2 sons. In fact my hubbys name is Aaron, so I think that is interesting. I'm not naming my child Hitler, or Saddam, I think that those names may evoke bad feelings from others...... but Cohen? Really?

Coen might be a celtic name with a different meaning. I don't know about that one. But Cohen, spelled like this, is Jewish. And it's not a "hebrew name". It's a position, which over time has also been turned into a last name. Similar to how a family of smiths might have the last name Smith, or a family of tanners would have the last name Tanner. People with the last name of Cohen are still assumed to have direct lineage to Aaron, and were probably from a long line of Cohens.
I don't know if I can make a christian example of what it would mean, since there's not a similar position in christian faith. I guess it would be sort of like being non-christian giving a child the name Pastor, Father, Pope or Priest.
